Isle of Wight, UK, 20-21 April 2013

Postby Derek-Dex-French » 23 Apr 2013, 21:23

A number of Pan riders belonging to the UK Owners Club went to the Isle of Wight at the weekend. We stayed at the Queensmead Hotel in Shanklin (no, 'Shanklin; is not something you get arrested for doing).
The weather was beautifully sunny, dry, and at around 13c was a distinct improvement on temperatures so far this year in the UK. I think a BritSToc to the Isle of Wight would not go amiss as the isle can be absolutely stunning in places, from the hairpins around Ventnor to the sweeping views on the military road in the south and dramatic views from various vantage points particularly at the east end of the island.
Start of the Saturday run outside the hotel in Shanklin:

I have to report just one 1100 amongst the 1300s. It was a blue and gold-pinstripe model just like the one I used to own.

The vast majority of active riding members of the club are now on 1300s. I think it is a practical thing. 1100s are very much now into maintenance mode and require a more dedicated type of owner than those who just like to ride. If Honda do not produce a replacement Pan then the club as it is currently will diminish in terms of active riders and become more like, say, the Vincent Owners Club where machines get wheeled out on a few days of the year, but otherwise do not get ridden so much. For myself I enjoy the social side of the club AND I enjoy riding. With regard to the bike itself I have made changes which generally make it better for me to ride and I hope to enjoy ownership of the current bike I have for quite a number of years yet. If it starts to become in any way unreliable then I would have to consider changing because when I want to ride, I want to ride!

Your 1300 should be good to go for quite some time, shouldn't it?
If Honda doesn't come with an ST mk. III probably the only alternative to an ST is a BMW sports tourer...

Understand that Derek i must admit i don't enjoy working on the bikes like i used to, been thinking for a while about selling both bikes a getting a newer one.
But i sort of got attached to the 1100 never happened before.

Derek, there is of course the VFR1200T which should be out any day now...... Having ridden the VFR12 and the Crosstourer I reckon the engine's a peach and I'd love to see the touring version.
