You might need to consider installing a galvanic isolator (AKA audio transformer) into the audio line between Satnav and intercom HU (head-unit) to avoid distortions (or worse: a toasted audio stage in the GPS) due to a ground loop...

A very wise remark. A € 5 1:1 transformer will protect your equipment from being toasted.

My intercom is only a 'simple' battery powered op-amp device, with the earpiece output isolated via capacitors, so it ought to join up ok. My significant other is insisting she doesn't want to listen to 'Emily' or 'Katy' - only the bloke..... ;)

You could always isolate the better half off your system and ask her to use an iPod and hand signals :D
