email spoofing...

Postby mbrST1100 » 08 Nov 2015, 21:18

Darn...

for the past 36 hours I'm getting Email-bombed with mailer-daemon notifications... like >200/day...
Someone/somewhat using my email-addy as "sender" for some big_F spam...
Apparently are mostly aol, msn and wanadoo addys on their list...

I traced the SMTP of this sucker, turns out the machine is located in Odessa/Ukraine: http://www.speedguide.net/ip/91.90.15.74

Could somebody pleeeze "nuke" this place/exploitable server... I'm sooo sick of it...

M and all,

You might try doing a search on your email address to see where it is posted on the internet.

Then delete it where found as much as possible.

Others?

LOL! One, which I can't edit, is actually right here: viewtopic.php?p=27730 :P

How the story continued:
first my ISP was accusing me as alleged source of SPAM emails...
I told them to better do their homeworks by posting some facts...
Not only has the haunt ended, the general amount on SPAM mails around has suddenly decreased... seems the ISP has woken up, updating the black-list...

My email lets me mark unwelcome or bad emails that I receive as "spam" or even as "phishing scams". Then, later emails from that same email address automatically get put into my Junk Mail or Trash.

Does your A1 email service also allow you to do that? (I am not saying that I understand enough about your situation to guarantee that that will help you.)

(Maybe we should both ask if our archives here can be edited.)

We use Incredimail via POP and we use Gmail mainly which catches most spam etc. I also have a Yahoo email and that catches most spam as well. Both sites sometimes let mail that I want into the junk folder and sometimes spam gets through so it's not perfect but then what is? With Incredimail we can bounce spam back to it's source in most cases; depends on how the email headers are configured I guess. We can also go into the blocked senders list and edit the "sender@domain.com" to just "@domain.com" and it blocks all emails from that site. Can't do that with major email sites like Gmail, Yahoo etc.

I check the junk mail folders at Gmail and Yahoo least weekly to make nothing gets put in there that's supposed to go to the inbox and any spam that makes into the inbox gets marked as spam.

M and all,

If they sent emails from your email address, then I would revise my advice, to read:

Change your email password. (They may have both your email address and your current password; if so, they can log onto your email account.)

(Again, I am just taking the simple-minded approach here.)

User accessible web interface of the email account has kinda limited SPAM settings, they were set on [strict] right from the beginning, but the functionality was never really "tight"... I also check it/its content on daily bases, to not miss any messages dropped into the SPAM folder unintentionally (like confirmations from on-line merchants I'd placed an order at, etc...)

Email-browser in use also has SPAM marking/filter, working satisfying, sometimes overzealous... so always check before purging the designated folder...

Web-mail was dormant during the event, so was the email-browser on my machine...
PW has been changed, no issue there either...
It was a spoofing and didn't come from my side at all...

However, since the little "conversation" with the ISP, SPAM went down to a fraction, it doesn't even make it into the SPAM folder of the web-mail account... so they did tinker something in the background...
Also the mailer-daemon notifications stopped like throwing a switch to off...
