How to clone harddrives to bootbale SSD?

Postby mbrST1100 » 26 Sep 2015, 10:37

Hi,

since SSDs (like 128GB) are finally getting affordable, I plan to upgrade some/all of my netbooks (7 & 10") to SSD drives... quicker, less power consumption etc...

The issue is how to clone the existing standard HD so the SSD will then be bootable?
Are SSDs even working on older machines running under WinXPpro which BIOS does not feature a AHCI-mode?

Martin - You might look at something like MiniTool Partition Wizard (not used it personally). I used to use Partition Magic but Symantec bought them then killed the product. Go figure!

Phil, I'll also need some hardware/adapter I can plug into the aux SATA port of my mains laptop on one side, and both (old IDE and SSD) drives together on the other side?

Martin - Google SATA to IDE adapter cable - I've used a similar cable to copy the contents of a IDE drive to a SATA drive (they make them for use with standard IDE drives and laptop IDE drives). I've not found the 'permanent' convertor adapters to be very good though.

Ghost will do the imaging for you [some drives come with a 1 PC copy] or you might try one of the freeware tools like Easus http://www.partition-tool.com/
Keep an eye out for 500GB drives as prices are dropping to around the £100 mark I picked one up off Amazon last time they gave a £10 discount for £105.

The \Amazon CamelCamel price watcher is good for checking price variances they have a UK,US and German version
