Windows 10

Postby mbrST1100 » 01 Jun 2015, 16:40

Well, as of today my task-bar shows shows a new icon, offering a FOC upgrade to Win 10...

Before doing that, the matter has to be seriously researched and thought over... ;)

Rumor in tech circles is that it will be 'free' for a while, then there will be a subscription to continue to be able to updates - which are usually needed for security purposes. :D

Now that's a solid argument to stay the hell clear of it... ;)
Over here the OS is expensive enough, € 140,- and up for a Win7pro_64 license... Office not included...

And there is the next crux, cause if I remember correctly will Win10 have that dreaded Office365 which a) can only be "rented" (€ 7,-/month or € 70,-/year) and b) is a friggen cloud-application, so all your (possible sensitive) documents are "out there"... now who da hell wants that?!!

edit:
OTOH, having her on the machine would be really tempting... ;)

Just be aware Win 10 has not been released yet, its still under test as pre release and if you do upgrade you may end up with a dead device :o

But I like it so far ;)

The prompt enables reservation for downloading the official release, roll-out starting July 29th, 2015...

However, many questions do arise, issues with hardware drivers, various applications not running, etc...

My instinct would suggest to at least wait for the release of SP1...

It does appear that Office 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2013 have been tested with WIN10 in the beta version and seem to work. I too would not touch it until the first service pack comes out! And if it is like Win 7, there will be lots of drivers 'missing' for older devices such as printers, etc.

For sure, that campaign is SOP to force users into having to buy new hardware and accessories...

So far not had any issues with drivers on either laptops, not got round to playing with my printers or older software yet, updates to follow :)

Am thinking of a new travelling laptop (one is due soon anyways) and it will get Win 10 after being wiped of what ever version of 8 is on it so that will be a real test. Did the same with Win 7 when it came out and was very happy with the results

Well, the saying "never touch a running system" is a key-line...

My Win7 machines (as well as the WinXP ones I'm still clinching on to ;-)) are running flawless, absolutely flawless...

So what's possible to gain from a (premature) update to Win10?
