I think WIN10 is aimed more at WIN8/8.1 which wasn't the best platform for desktops though with later updates it does seem better. I used the shell program at first but have since got rid of it all is ok. Once I saw that WIN8 simply opened the start button up to full screen on start up it all became easier. Now I just go to the desktop and do everything from there as I used to before.

WIN10 if I choose it will give what seems a hybrid between WIN7 and WIN8 with the best features of both (so they say). I would perhaps put WIN10 on the laptop to see what it's like but it's early days and I would wait for at least 6 months before doing so.

I'm not sure what the fuss is about lacking printer drivers is as any printer you buy has an install disc though our printer needs updated drivers to run on WIN8 so I've set it up on Heather's WIN7 and it's shared so I can use it if I need to.

As for MS Office (only Excel and Word) I'm using the 2000 version on WIN8.1 and some updates have come through for it so it might still be ok on WIN10.

On Win 7 Pro, many parallel print drivers were dropped for older HP Printers (some of the deskjets and laserjets) plus other devices such as RS232 emulator drivers which you use in a factory setting. I don't expect Win 10 to be any better. If a printer works well, why should I have to jettison it? I've standardized printers across the company for years so we don't have to stock 14 different kinds of printer cartridges - HP seems to change them with every new iteration of printers. And used printer models I use are plentiful and cheap on EBAY :D

Even had issues with professional office LAN-copy/print/scanners... getting my Toshiba eStudio 4511 operational with Win7pro_64 did cost me nearly one hour of my life...
Also my Canon EOS was suddenly incompatible, I had to contact Canon support for info about digging into the camera software/settings to switch it into mass-storage mode... so no convenient OEM Canon photo preview/editing/storage software anymore...

Rumours tell that Win10 might only be a beefed up Win7, with graphical Win8/1 accents added...
But with enhanced user-incapacitation... finding essentials like your network settings panel will be another scavenger hunt... same with file sharing on LAN, etc...
Dunno why they have that irrational reverie that all users only have one machine connected via DHCP... damn, I run a network with static IPs here...

What usually makes me a little crazy is that all the 'stuff' is usually there from previous releases, Microsoft just moves it around to keep the riff-raff out of the trade! The best thing they added to Win 7 was the function search - that at least shortens the time for the Easter Egg Hunt ... :D

I agree wholeheartedly on this UP!!!
Already bugged me largely from Win3.11 up and onward... same in Excel or Word...

I run win 8 on the desktop and laptop, works faster especially with SSDs. Unfortunately my desktop cannot run 8.1 as it does not have some features in the processor. My setup works now so no need to change, same as when I ran XP until I just had to change.

Our laptop is upgrading to WIN10 as I type. More for evaluation at this time.

I don't have an issue with 8.1 on my desktop but the laptop's updates have been slightly different in that an update to minimise an app window was either missed or removed by a latter update. Plus I can see what works on there and what doesn't but in the foreseeable future WIN 8.1 will stay on this one.

WIN7 on Heather's PC will stay on as we will loose the Windows Media Centre which we have used in the past for watching TV on. It would be nice though to get an update on the Blu Ray codec as one movie (The 2nd Hobbit one) won't play on. I did find out that it will play 3D movies as well but I don't have those red/blue glasses to watch the one movie we do have (Resident Evil: Retribution).
