Library & archive access?

Should we make our library and my-mc archive accessible to unregistered guests?

Yes, interested folks should be able to view that content without registering.

No, interested folks should register first if they want access to this content.

Frankly, I don't care, most of it is in the public domain already anyway.

I vote yes and no

I agree that you should be registered to view the topics therefore that way you will know the lay of the land and that it has its peculiarities as mentioned by Pieter in another post. This also might bring us in extra members.

I disagree that you need to be a member to view which I assume would also allow google to index which might give us higher ratings on google which might bring us in extra members.

On balance I will sit on the fence. With a slight bias towards one or the other.

Peter.

Don't assume that I don't care cause I do.

But I can see both arguments.

Perhaps we should leave it open for say a month and see what happens.

It's all going to be down to Google (other search engines are apparently available)

When google searches it what is it going to find? Answers to questions? Or personal data that some people thought had been lost for ever.

Thanks for your input so far folks. Keep it coming.

Although I voted to keep the content only open for registered members, I am more and more leaning towards opening them up.

First, there is nothing "ours" about it, we are just publishing what members have provided from their own archives. Most of which is in the public domain already.

Second, say if someone googles, say, ST100 Newsletter and finds a link to our archives, it might well put him off if the content is not accessible. He or she imho is likely to think fuck it, and click the next search result. Whereas if he finds what he was looking for, he may consider registering anyway.

As for the suggestion made by Martin and others to only display the index but require membership to read the articles, I had that idea too, but regrettably that can't be done in phpBB. Permissions are assigned on a (sub)forum level, not per post.

Can you make an option that the content can be searched by bots and the content identified but the content can then only be read by logged-in users as a compromise? That way you get the search hit and can then possibly attract membership, too?

Yup, that is how permissions are set presently.

But IMHO possible copyright issues must be met... dunno if i.e. Honda could object on seeing a workshop manual or addendum free floating on the Inet...
These days even linking a picture found on the Inet can raise legal cases...

With regards to FINDING the archive, I would suggest it be made easier to do so from the main topics page. Right now, one has to look through the various forums to find the my-mc archive heading, which is at the top of the page under "Biking in General" and could be missed by someone who's eyes might be more immediately drawn to the bigger main topics list on that page. Can the archive not be shown as its own heading on the main page (Board Index)? Again, this may attract new members who immediately are able to see it upon coming to the site.
