Pruning?

Pruning?

Postby Pieter Huizinga » 14 Jan 2013, 22:43

Folks,

phpBB has a feature to automatically prune topics not replied to for x days and/or not viewed in y days. We can switch it on per forum.
I have not activated any of it. But it might be worth considering, for e.g. the General Chat forum. For sufficiently large values of x and y. ;)

Thoughts please?

Not too sure Pieter. I myself like going through old posts now and again, even among old stuff on certain topics little pearls of wisdom get in there that relate to other subjects that may be of help. Stuff that's sort of off topic if you follow.

Some forums maintain such in sections like [humor] or maybe [for sale], other threads however might contain viable tech info on anything, or gems/anecdotes of some historical value (essays about fork oil changes come to mind :D ) ...

But I second Keith on keeping an eye on any costs for storage as well as backups and other services arising...

Yep prune some for sure as Martin point's out humour xxx shouldn't have tech stuff in anyway. General however does get the odd gem in amongst the posts.

Pieter, my own preference is not to prune but this is obviously subject to storage restrictions the site may have. If it was necessary to prune then I would recommend threads that are non-technical or that have no long term data value for mining later, i.e. humour, etc.

Regards,
HH.

I'll keep an eye on the database, it's currently only 8 MB.

You then might reconsider the current attachement handling...
