Member map

Derek French has suggested the addition of a member map.

This is a much requested mod for phpBB, but all attempts to create a stable one so far have been abandoned.
Technically, the difficulties seem to be mostly that the board is running server-sided, whereas Google maps are running client-sided (in Javascript).
So you have to devise a 'bridge' between the server and your PC (in tech speak: AJAX).

I've found one that seems to do it, in Germany. You may want to have a look at the demo site:
http://www.4seven.de/forum/1/user_weather/user_map.php
login tester, password tester.

That seems to do what you would expect but I haven't looked at it in depth yet. As with most hobbyists, documentation seems very sparse and consists mostly of "it is easy to install". :)

Let me know what you all think.

I installed the mod, but it does not work 100% yet.
I have put in a support request with the author.
Please be patient until I get it fixed.

On the demo site there is the option of a weather and also a cloud overlay which looks quite nice. Don't know if it works correctly or how the 'feed' for weather might arrive, but looks neat anyway.
I love being right. If only it happened more often...

I regret to inform you that the author of the mod is unprepared to provide useful support.
I was afraid of this. He's a hobbyist.
I'll uninstall his mod and keep looking for one that works.

I'm still in a discussion with him. But it is going nowhere.

Meanwhile, I found out that he has been banned from the phpBB developer community in 2012, and a quick google search on "No users in map" shows at least 4 other boards with the same issue. But, like any amateur, he keeps claiming his mod is fine and *should* work, so it must be my board's fault. Not at all helpful.

I'll keep looking but do not hold your breath.

Maybe tell him what you have found out. Might help him at least.

Try a third party service instead, another forum I frequent uses (I pay fr the £10 a year autorenewal (Premium Service)) Pin in the Map based on Google Maps. Just share a password via secure area of this site.

Looks interesting Mark. Developers are based in Winchester in the UK. Pins would need to update from a master membership list and be based on (maybe) post/zip code and contain text of (say) the forum username. Pieter would need to offer an 'opt-in' option for forum members to allow their entry to appear on the map. Just my initial thoughts.
