Could someone list the types of things that can be attached?

Could someone list the types of things that can be attached?

Postby David W » 13 Oct 2013, 22:51

I have been able to "attach" a photo to a post here by referring to it as a "file" (or maybe, as a jpeg thingy).

I tried attaching a .kml file that is a map created by Google.com Maps. It did not attach; the .kml file type is not permitted here. (Steinar somehow fixed ww2.my-mc so that a .kml map would attach.)

Maybe if someone could list the file types that are permitted here, we could expand our posting abilities a bit.

- Just my two pence's worth. (Maybe next year? By the way, the photo attachment method goes very smoothly here.)

Dave, *most* filetypes are by default prohibited for upload on the board. So there is little use to list the filetypes that are allowed.
I can enable selected filetypes on request.

I'll have a look at the .kml filetype tomorrow - it's 1 AM here and I'm off to bed. :-)

Keith is right. But I also enabled .kml for upload as attachment in cases where it's not possible to use the googlemaps button.

Pieter and all,

Don't lose sleep over these small details.

I just now created a .kml map file using Google.com and its "Get Directions". The name of the file was "DrivingdirectionstoZurichSwitzerland.kml".
It failed. The message I got was "The image file you tried to attach is invalid.". (Maybe it was too big?)
-----------------------------------------------------------

Keith and all,

Thanks for telling me about the Google button. I found that button and inserted the name of my file as follows:
[googlemap]DrivingdirectionstoZurichSwitzerland.kml[/googlemap]
It did not produce a map. I must insert a "link" instead of a file name? What is the URL for Keith's map above? (I will try inserting that when I find it out.)

A Map of Europe from A to Z, anyone? (a sucessful test map)

Postby David W » 15 Oct 2013, 21:42

The road up to the mountains: a test map using Keith's instructions above (and the googlemap button here). From Amsterdam to Zurich, Switzerland.

Keith and all,

Thanks for the extra how-to.
I think I am saving to my Google account when following Keith's googlemap method. I logged on to Google.com first and then saved to "My Maps". (I did not click on the blue KML logo this time; doing that would I think save the map to my computer instead.)

Keith's map above shows what looks to be an interesting road in northern Scotland.

Pieter and all,

The googlemap button here produces the same posted map as the .kml method, as far as I can see. So it should be all we need here. Thanks for that feature. (The only fly in the ointment is that it may require having a Google account.)

Dave, I didn't have time to test it, but the .kml filetype is now allowed as attachment (NOT a picture).
If that doesn't work I need to take another look.
As Keith explained, if you wish to embed a Google map as a picture in your post, use the youtube button as explained. Works for me.

Pieter and all,

I am clicking on "Upload Attachment" to try to attach a .kml map file to my post here. The message I get is:
"The image file you tried to attach is invalid."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I just tested with a "Microsoft Word" document file to see if it can be attached. Apparently it can using Google Chrome but not using IE, which is probably IE9 here. (Such documents are useful because they can contain "tables".)
