40 AMP Alternator

But we'll might have to befriend ourselves with the fact, that if the engine sided cover of the ST's generator has cracked, the possible 3rd party replacement might not be the cure.

There might be a good chance for a stator, a possible one for a rotor and a slight one for the rear cover with regulator...

Excellant find Martin. However I might have found a second hand unit from Europe (the big bit that is not attached to the UK). Delivered for £130 all in. Watch this space.

Not mine to be honest, originated from a UK rider on st-owners (who knows how he got it...), and re-imported back ;)

Well, and those US prices might cause your eyes to tear...

http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/H ... parts.html

$ 400,- US for a complete alt?! That's like € 300,- at the moment...

Quick update. Used part arrived, having found it in a German breakers after a google search. Total inclding delivery was 156 euro. From a 96 pan with 40k kms on the clock. Everything looks good. The service from the breaker was great and he answered all my questions before I commited to buy.
Still plan to repair my own once it is removed as I remain convinced that there is a solution to this problem. Thanks for everyones input so far. Cheers

Sounds like a good deal!
Do you intend to give it a precautionary overhaul, like new bearings, new brushes or give the stator a good shot with ACF-50?

Martin. It turns by hand and the action seems smooth. I was going to ask about ACF-50 and whether it is safe to use and on which parts. Which parts are safe to spray? Casing is solid without cracks etc. Still might consider new parts inside but I have a limited technical ability.
