Board move + upgrade

Postby Pieter Huizinga » 16 Nov 2014, 14:01

The development server of Exite, where the board currently runs, is way past its end of life and hence to be discontinued in the near future (think 3 months or so). Exite have offered us to move the board to one of their production servers, and to continue hosting the board free of charge there. An offer we can't refuse.

So I'll be making preparations to move the board in the coming weeks. In order to not lose any posts, it will be inevitable that the board will go offline during the transition itself. My educated guess is that that might take around one day. It will be duly announced in this topic when the time is there.

Meanwhile, this also presents me with a splendid opportunity to upgrade the board to the latest version (3.1) of phpBB, so I am considering to combine the migration and upgrade in one project. No worries: Keith, Dave, Houndie and I will test-drive the new board thoroughly, and may ask a few of you to do the same if you have the time and the willingness to do so, before we actually move over.

Stay tuned for further developments!

The board will be offline for around a half hour sometime this afternoon, in order to make a safe copy of the database.
We wouldn't want inconsistencies in that backup as it is meant to be the source of the move+upgrade project.
I apologize for any inconvenience.

According to phpBB support, the "automatic updater" to 3.1 will keep almost all plug-ins (or MODs as they are called in phpBB-ese) running, Adam.
So I am cautiously optimistic about that. As always, the proof of the pudding...

This afternoon, the board will be offline for a couple of hours to make sure we can make a clean crossover to the new webserver.
I'm sure you will appreciate that I'd like to avoid a corrupted database, so we can't have new posts while the move is in progress.
