How to Post (and Unpost) Here

Postby David W » 08 Aug 2014, 02:56

Ever see someone post something here and then you say to yourself, "I would like to post something like that, too." ?
It could be a video, a map, a photo, or a link that has an appropriate name like "click here".

If so, you can use this thread to find out how it is all done here.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For starters, can a poster delete his own post later? If so, how much time does one have to do that?

If one does not have the tool needed to delete an old post because it is too old, what kind of privilege

does one need to ask for in order to delete ones old post?
'Tis not its looks, but how it cooks.
And I've found that most liter size Pans, when warmed up, cook well.

One thing to consider when posting.

If you use an online storage medium like Photo-bucket and use a link to a photo (e.g.) be careful that you don't remove/move the item from/in the host site as you will break the link.

There is no time or other restriction on deleting one's own posts, nor does phpBB offer such a feauture AFAIK.
phpBB does offer the possibility to "prune" old posts, but for obvious reasons this has been turned off on my-mc-phoenix.

See above.

I will be looking to delete this post of mine and will report back here my results:

viewtopic.php?f=8&t=13799&p=180583&hilit=+detour#p180583

I do not see a delete icon yet; I can edit though.

Edit: I found out below that I will not be able to delete said post myself because it has been responded to.
(See especially posts below labeled How to Unpost Here.)

Just now I posted a reply using the permissions of a regular registered user, and I do get the delete icon, so I'm at a loss why you wouldn't.
"Delete own posts" is set to "Yes" for registered users on all forums on the board.

Also, if you edit a post, there's also a "Delete" option there:

Sorry Pieter,

I don't get the "X" for delete show up (1st image) and when I go to edit one of my posts I don't get the delete option you show in your second image either.

Testing Alan's credentials.
I get the X. This is interesting. Alan could you reply and test if you see the X then?

I checked the phpBB support forum. It says
Users also cannot delete posts that have been replied to, or ones that were posted before the "Limit deleting time:" cutoff
i.e. you can not delete your post after there is a reply. The "limited deleting time" is not active on my-mc-phoenix.

I guess this means that if you want a post deleted after it has been replied to, you'll have to ask a moderator.

How to Unpost Here

Postby David W » 09 Aug 2014, 18:30

I am just testing the idea that a post replied to cannot be deleted by the original poster.

I can (using two different ways) delete this post of mine at this time but elect not to do so.

Now, I will try responding to this post to verify that any reply to it nullifies my ability to delete this post.

(Edit: Responding to this post has now nullified my ability to delete this test post; see the first post on the next page.)
