New Jersey to Edelweiss Tour August - September

Europe minus Britain.

We fly back to New Jersey tomorrow. I've spend a week riding and driving here and here are some thoughts. First, drivers, riders, and even pedestrians pay significantly more attention to their surroundings than in the US. These activities have become second or third matters of attention. The US roads are different and afford more margin for error and it seems we have adapted and become lazy and less proficient at navigating ourselves around.

We have stretches of roadway that are marked with double yellow centerlines for miles and miles prohibiting passing. It seems unless the most sluggish of vehicles is able to make a pass, then all vehicles are prohibiting from attempting passing.

As I mentioned previously, when we booked this trip I bought some Learn to Speak German CDs and have been practicing for 6 months. One thing I heard was that people appreciate if you try and will gladly help you. I was a little cynical but found that to be very true. I enjoyed in acting with people and stumbling through my very limited language skills. We stopped by the Innsbruck airport when we returned the rental car (Skoda Octavia - LIKED that car) to ask a question. The counter was closed for training of 5 new employees. When we asked a short question they offered to help us as long as we didn't mind it taking a little longer than usual. Outstanding customer service from Austrian airline and Lufthansa.

We are already planning our return. And very much expect it to be back to Austria and the Tyrol region.

I'll have a little to more to say once I get home and can reflect a bit more. I don't know if this will be understand here but we keep saying we think we've been kidnapped and are in The Truman Show.

As I always say, Nothing compares to riding the Alps anywhere that I've been so far!

Phil, it must have been the company that made you enjoy it so much......even the terrible guide that left you to find your own way for one day.

A link to my Smugmug photo album for the trip. The cloudy looking one is a video I titled Don't Look Down.

In a couple of those pictures with your wife in the mountainous scenery, I was wondering if she broke into song?! "The hills are alive . . . with the sound of music . . . "
