Germany / Austria Flooding.

Postby Derek-Dex-French » 03 Jun 2013, 14:30

Looks to be some serious flooding in Austria at the moment. BBC reports a month's rain has fallen in just two days.
I love being right. If only it happened more often...

In Prague, a friend of mine was evacuated. I just read that in Austria, entire villages are flooded. Germany is fighting floods, and here in the Lowlands we're expected to get all that water in during the weekend.

Good to live on the 4th floor. And good I'll be in the UK in the weekend.

Picked up this picture of the village Passau (on the Rhine).

Forecast for Holland is that water levels in Rhine and Maas will be 12.5 meter above normal.

Yep, Passau reports levels exceeding those of a major flood disaster in the 16th century...
Other areas further downstream of the Danube (as well as along other major rivers) do look pretty bad too...
This morning all land based connections to western parts of Austria were cut off, no roadways, no trains...

However, much of this is caused by human interference with the nature... take the flow regulations as example...
As long as they were natural rivers the occasional floods where absorbed, slowed down, etc... by the floodplains, the woodland, etc...
But then the human race had the 'splendid idea' of creating concreted 'motorways' for rivers... so floods are just speeding downstream unhindered to brutally hit on other areas further down...

And that areas known to be flooded for thousands of years, have been sold as building sites in the recent years, doesn't help much either...
The major, yet destructive cutbacks on the military budget (normally the armed forces were engaged during disasters, their the only institution which can command hundreds of men equipped with shovels, picks, sandbags, excavators, dozzers, trucks, blankets, tents, cots, field kitchens, field hospital, air rescue and others at the instant and can be on sites within only a few hours...), are worsening matters even more (did those politicians really expect the small, rural volunteer fire departments in those villages to have sufficient man power & equipment for such cases...???)
But it all doesn't matter, as per today the politicians have announced meetings to coordinate the rescue and protection measures... HUH?! Isn't that at least like 1 week too late?!!!... That rain didn't come over night, its pouring since a couple of weeks now for crying out loud...
