The 'Other One'

Postby Aberdeen » 14 Jan 2015, 15:53

This is my, 'buggerin' about with' bike.

A '96 Moto Guzzi Nevada 750NTX with 5K on the clock. I am the second owner from new and I've only had it for a couple of years now. She always thinks the ST can look a bit intimidating for other road users whereas when I got this home on the trailer she came out and said, "Now that's a friendly looking wee bike".

Over this Winter I'm stripping it down for thorough cleaning, maintenance, needed replacements/improvements, etc., and taking all the fancy bits off so it'll be back to how a naked bike should be although as it sits here it's exactly as it was when it came out of the local showroom.

It had the original battery, tyres, brake fluid, air filter, etc, so those have been replaced already. I didn't realise rubber could become so hard!! Engine crash bars are off for now but may go back - we'll see.

Installed another Muvi insurance camera, cylinder head crash guards, grip puppies, modified sidestand (to decrease the ridiculous lean angle while parked up), throttle thumb rest, homemade front mudflap (essential), oil pan thermometer, new billet/stainless highway pegs in front of the engine (to give the old knees a rest on longer rides), Gopro mount, gps speed readout, gear indicator, ipod dock, TPMS, led voltmeter and twin USB outlets though all add-ons are powered anyway from a new hardwired, 'engine running' relay driven multiway fusebox.

Going to cut down an old ST1300 screen to make a low line much smaller screen instead of the freaky barn door it came with.

My favourite Shark Evoline 3 helmet is fitted for the Starcom intercom on the ST1300 so I've had to make up a new cable to suit its input as well as have it match to the 3.5mm socket in this ipod waterproof case - now that was fun.

Just as easy as the ST1300 to work on and I can't get over how simple a machine it is.

Changing as many fasteners to Stainless Steel as I can, getting rid of as much ugly Italian black plastic as I can and trying to get the v-twin to run as close to smoothly as I can - now that's a job and a half! After a while the buzz between the legs develops its own attraction.

I've learnt a lot about getting chromework back to good enough condition without needing replacement but it's murder on your nails!!!!

Fun to mess with and ride but strictly solo riding only. Wife went on it once but found it too small for a pillion - at last I can get to ride solo without a whinge in my ear about not taking her with me! Lovely wee thing to ride leisurely through the countryside when you're not too bothered about actually getting anywhere special.

Nice work, whilst the Hepko & Becker provide a bit of an abrupt change in style though... ;-)

They do too. MInd you they're little better than useless because being double walled there's only enough room inside for your mobile, a bottle of milk and the wallet! Don't want to take them off though for some reason - no idea what it is.

Nice ride, looks clean as a whistle, health to enjoy.
Always fancied a Guzzi; the Le Mans was a favourite pipe dream as a spotty faced youth, but a California would do the job now ;)

Apparently there's a guy down South who makes replicas of the various MG racing models using the 750 Nevada as the basis because they mostly use the same frame/engine/tranny, etc. Does a fabulous job for not too much money and they are so convincing. They come with a cert to verify they aren't the real thing but they supposedly go very well. He tweeks the motor too so they lose the sluggishness this one has - very soft tuning but not too difficult to beef up I think.

I'm doing as much to this one as the wife will let me get away with so quite happy with it for now!!

Both models look good. I wonder if she can ride as good as she looks?

Never mind. I would ride her anytime.
